For those interested, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" was made in to a movie in 2008. I'm putting the trailer below. After you read the short story you should have an idea of the different creative direction that the movie took!
Week 7 of Quarantine
For this week, please complete the following assignments: 1. Zoom meeting Monday at 11:30. 2. Watch "The Great Gatsby" online using youtube. You will need to log out of your account and sign in with my account info listed below. If there are any difficulties please email me. Google likes to perform security checks and I may need to "approve" some of the viewings. While watching, make mental notes of similarities and differences between the book and the film. How did the director allow for themes and symbols from the book to be conveyed on the screen. Rental Information: "The Great Gatsby" on youtube (sign in with the below info) email: [email protected] password: Gretel28 3. Complete the below journals (#6- requires watching the youtube link and #7- after watching the movie). Email me ALL of journals 1-7 if you have not done so already by Saturday! 4. Optional deleted scenes to watch in below youtube links. While the movie did its best to integrate every key moment from the play, they ultimately had to cut a few scenes due to time. Enjoy watching some of the scenes that were cut! Question whether or not their absence impacted the plot of the film or changed meaning from the story. Week 6 of Quarantine
For this week, please complete the following assignments: 1. Zoom Meeting Monday at 11:30- We'll discuss this week's work as well as passage analysis from chapters 7 and 8. If you are unable to attend, watch or listen to the zoom meeting in the Zoom folder that was shared last week. and complete the makeup assignment as instructed on the home page of this website. 2. Dialectical journals for chapters 7-9 are due by Saturday at 5pm. 3. Complete the below Journals (#4 and #5) after finishing the book. Continue to save these electronically. Week 5 of Quarantine (Post Spring Break):
For this week, please work on the following assignments: 1. Zoom Meeting Monday at 11:30 (this is finally our "official" meeting time each week) Please see the instructions on the Home Page if you miss a Zoom meeting on how to make up that participation credit. 2. Work on reading chapters 7-9 (dialectical journals due NEXT week) 3. Journal #2 and #3- Posted Below (continue typing these/ saving them electronically) 4. Watch the below youtube videos: Part of reading and studying a book about the 1920's is also about understanding the culture of the time period! The following youtube links showcase 2 unique dance styles from the 1920s: The Charleston and the Quickstep. These dance styles are shown through the TV show "Dancing with the Stars" (a personal favorite of mine!) where dance pros teach celebrities with no dance background a new type of dance each week. Notice their quick and precise footwork! These are obviously some of the better examples. Enjoy and get some 1920s vibes! Week 4 of Quarantine:
For this week, below are the following assignments: 1. Zoom Meeting Monday at noon- discuss chapter 4 of Gatsby (see annotation pictures to the right) 2. Gatsby 4-6 Dialectical Journal due by Midnight on Thursday, April 9th After that, please enjoy your "Spring Break"!! Below were our talking points at Monday's zoom. Great job everyone!! Week 3 of Quarantine:
It was SO great to see everyone today!! In case it gets lost, I'm putting the new Gatsby guide below. For this week, please email me pictures of your 2 worksheets that everyone received today (also posted below) by Sunday. There will be another optional Zoom meeting this week on Thursday from 12-12:30 to discuss passages in chapters 3 and 4 of Gatsby.
In Chapter 3 of Gatsby (P. 45) we discover a character named "Owl Eyes" in Gatsby's library. He marvels over the books and the fact that they are "real", but the pages are not "cut". Above is an image of an un-cut book. It was more affordable for a printing press to print pages 4 at a time, but then the reader would have to go through and "cut" the pages themselves. Since Gatsby's pages aren't cut, it means that he simply has them for show- but he is going all out to create this wealthy image that he wants people to perceive him as.
Week 2 of Quarantine: On Monday (3/30) the school will be holding another drop-off/ pick-up day for materials (an email will be sent later this week from BSH) and all Honors English students in 9-12 (and other English class with Mrs. Kidder) will be asked to return their annotated work and materials. Mrs. O'Brien, Mrs, Kidder, and I will all be present to check your worksheets, annotations, and return them to you. I'll send an update after the school has sent their announcement with regards to how this will work and adhere to social distancing guidelines. On Monday Please bring: 1. Your Journal 2. Your Gatsby Book 2. The Characterization worksheet for this week
Week 1 of Quarantine:
An email was sent home on Monday 3/16 with work for this week. Below I am also linking the power point slides that I created for this weeks "agenda". By Friday afternoon, I need the following from each of you: 1. A picture of your documentary worksheet- front & back 2. A picture of the figurative language worksheet for Gatsby- front and back 3. A picture of your assignment tracker for the 3rd quarter (excluding those whose trackers I already have!) I made a youtube video (yay?) breaking down chapter 1 page 1 of Gatsby. More of these will be coming as a supplement for class discussions on the reading that I really wish we could have!

Annotation ToolsAbove are notes from the first 2 pages of Chapter 4. The second page provides clarification on the many names mentioned and the purpose of them.
Below are notes from pages 47 and 48 of Gatsby (from Chapter 3). I will elaborate further on these points during the 4/2 zoom session. As you begin reading Gatsby, question our narrator and his description of both the times and setting. For example, on page 1 I noticed that our narrator Nick is writing reflectively as he recalls whatever events lead him to reflect on "The Great Gatsby".
